I was looking at some old footage at home today. I found a folder I had completely forgotten about! When I was in Shillong... On my last day there, I picked up my camera and went out. The shoot was over.

From Police Bazaar, I walked to a pretty crowded lane. It was the marketplace. Fifty bucks, fifty bucks, fifty bucks... I am fascinated by the local markets at every place. They reflect the authentic culture of that place. No touristy stuff. So, come on. Let's visit the bazaars of Shillong while in self-isolation.

When I reached, the shops had just assembled. I got to see the morning hubbub. A tea-vendor was walking around, selling everyone tea. Behind her, another woman was selling bread, samosa and other local foods from her basket. They both knew the shopkeepers well.

They were chatting with everyone on their way. I got to see a lot of new things here. First was supari (betel nuts). Lots and lots of betel nuts. Betel nuts have a huge sale here. Of course, you can't only have betel nuts. So, they have a whole section only for betel leaves. They also had local vegetables, which looked so organic! Root vegetables and stuff... By the way, this is a famous item here. Bhut jolokia. It is the world's hottest chili.

Many shops had special knives and things for sale. I  have noticed, that the Majority of people here are women. I found that interesting. Women handle a major part of the economic transactions in this state. The social structure here is generally matriarchal. Lucky that I got my camera along.

It also attracted more attention though. If I hadn't entered this narrow lane, I'd have certainly missed this interesting bazaar. As a traveler, these are the things I love doing. Things that don't normally appear in blogs like 'Ten things to do in Shillong'.

But are worth saving in your heart's gallery. You ever traveled on an off-beat path? Let us know in comments.

Ima Market Manipur,  Ima Keithel (Mother's Market)

This market isn't just the largest market in the world run by women...5000 Indian women. It's much more than that. It's a symbol of female strength and of the freedom movement here in India. When the British came, they tried to take this market. But the women here in Manipur, the women of the market, they defended the market from the British in what's known as the 'Women's War'.

If it wasn't for these Manipuri women heir, this market would simply not be here anymore. Guys, can you imagine 5000 angry Indian women? Oh my god! I can't imagine that. I don't want it. And there's a saying here as well: Only a woman's heart is soft. That means the rest of them is tough as guts.

And we have seen that in the freedom movement here in India with all the female freedom fighters. And just every day in Haryana.. my god. Super tough women there. So let's go check out this historic market and do some shopping. There's so much you can find here in Ema Market. Let's go through it really quickly.

So you've got the fruit and veg market. you can have a pineapple in 30 rupees heir Amazing. That is so cheap. That is less than a dollar American for pineapple. You've got the utensils market. So you can buy these if you want to.. you know. cut your vegetables or maybe your husband. I don't know. The flax market where you buy all kind of flex products which are really popular here in NorthEastern states, especially here in Manipur.

They make their houses out of flax even. And like a fence. They don't have a wooden fence here. It's a flax fence And it looks really beautiful. I've seen this especially in Assam where they have flax bridges even... This is just one of the buildings here that this market occupies. It's huge. Just behind the fruit market.

Then we have the fish and meat market here. Check out these fish. And as you guys can see, the fish is very very fresh here. A lot of them are still alive like they are squirming around in the water These are eels and I'm not sure.. they look very appetizing. Maybe they look better cooked.

Then you've got a lot of these dried fish as well. Little kind of spreads. They've been deepfried, You can just eat them that way. Next to the fish market, you've got the pottery market. Maybe you need a new Matka (pot) to store your water in the village or something.

By walking on the market narrow road we came across to the hotel So at this hotel you are gonna find deepfried. looks like a packed (fried snack) And they are cooking paratha here as well. This is just flatbread with potato filling.  It's loaded with customers as they have to start their day By having this as their breakfast. No market is complete without a spice market as well. I want to eat fish like the rest of the guys at the hotel.

In India, sometimes they call a restaurant, a hotel. But.. my friend doesn't like the smell of fish. What's wrong with him? So he's been waiting outside here next to the police station for me to come and grab him so we can go to the next market and check out the fashion.. the clothes.

So to set up a stall at this market, you have to pay about 40 rupees. And the police are busy here, kicking people off the side of the road, who have their own little stalls and haven't paid the fee.   So you can see all the women are moving and packing up their little stalls and they are here on the side of the road. The massive floating market,  It is huge here.

I don't know if I'm gonna find anything. Seems like a lot of female clothes here. You can find all sorts of clothes here. So you've got Indian clothes like suits and dupattas, saris. And then you've also got T-shirts and jeans and.. yeah western clothes too But it's more of the Indian clothes and especially the Mnaipuri style and the NorthEastern style of dress.

These are very thick shawls because it gets so cold here in Manipur. Like they are super thick. And the design of them is very NorthEastern specific. A lot of tribal influence, a lot of red, white and black which you see here in the North East and here in Manipur. This cloth market never ends. It's like a torture for a man.

I can't do so much cloth shopping. I get so bored. I hate shopping for clothes myself actually. I do it about once a year and then that's it for the whole year. And  I have one problem with this market. You have to be married to have a stall here. And I find that incredibly ironic, considering the fight against patriarchy and everything. And yet they exclude non-married women; women who don't want to have a husband or don't yet have a husband from opening stores in this market.

You have to have a husband. There are other reasons, but I'm pretty sure I won't agree with whatever reason it is All the women here carry their kids, their babies, on their back in these like sack pouch They seem to be carried everywhere around the North Eastern states. Kids are so damn cute with these fat little faces.

Ema Market is separated into three kinds of pink colored buildings. You've got the food market, the fruit market. Then you've got the clothing market. Then we are in the third one here. The third market is also clothing. North East types of clothes. I was hoping to find a gift for my friend here. But I just can't seem to find anything suitable here in this map.

It really is a market for locals rather than tourists looking to take something home. It's very much just for locals who need to buy some clothes, some fruits and vegetables... These types of things. Just an authentic North East Manipuri market. So friends, to pay tribute to the women of Ema Market who defeated the British.. in the comments, I want you guys to post who your favorite Indian female freedom fighter is. Post it in the comments and let's pay respect to our sisters.

This is Street Market in Thangal Bazar Imphal, Manipur In Imphal there are no shopping malls so street market is always crowded. There is not much scope for bargaining. Still, you can ask discount up to 10-15% The sellers are from Imphal city as well as nearby villages.

Lots of Bengali, and people from UP and Bihar also shifted here and sell their service and products. You can find cheap clothes, Warm clothes, toys, souvenirs, Shoes, Bags and many more It is most crowded in the evening Traffic police close the oneway road and divert traffic to another road. The market starts at 2 pm and Closes 6pm because after 6 pm everything slows down

Conclusion

For shopping in the northeastern region of India, you have a great option of bargaining the market is always packed with Customer because Only few market places are there for entire neighborhoods

people usually stay in remote places and it is very hard to travel because The Transportation is mainly by walk even the venders come to Market by a walk by traveling miles of forest. weekly we have only one day for Market for the entire Neighborhood so people have this process of fermenting and drying the meat and vegetables, so one day market is enough for a week.

Not every day is a good day in Northeastern people's life !!!!!!
